Praetorian Test Figure

Posted by Unknown |

Today, while the kids were napping and their aunt was over to help wrangle, I got some free time to paint. The goal was a "quick" paint job that would yield repeatable quality. So with Zulu playing in the background I got to it...

All paints are Reaper Master Series. "Slick water" is 10 parts distilled water to 1 part Winsor & Newton Flow Improver. Paintbrush is a Winsor & Newton Series 7 Size 0 Kolinsky Sable. Drybrush is an old blown out Reaper Golden Taklon 5/0. Thumbnails are links to larger images.

Phase 1: Washes
  • Tunic, Pant stripe, CCW Scabbard = Deep Red 9002 - mixed 1:1 with slick water
  • Breeches, Collar, Cuffs = Midnight Blue 9019 - 1:1 with slick water
  • Boots, gun, base, beard = Pure Black 90337 - 1:1 with slick water
  • Skin = Rosy Shadow 9067 - 1:1 with slick water
  • Epaulets = Marigold Yellow 9007 - 1:1 with slick water
  • Pith helmet lines = Rainy Grey 9038 - 1:1 with slick water

    Phase 2: Main Color
  • Tunic, Pant stripe, CCW Scabbard = Clear Red 9094 - mixed 1:1 with slick water
  • Breeches, Collar, Cuffs = Brilliant Blue 9116 - 2:1 with slick water
  • Boots, gun, base = Pure Black 90337 - 2:1 with slick water
  • Epaulets = Lemon Yellow 9009 - undiluted (drybrushed)
  • Gunmetal = Honed Steel 9053 - undiluted
  • Gold = Antique Gold 9050 - undiluted

    Phase 3: Highlights
  • Boots, gun = Rainy Grey 9038 - 2:1 with slick water
  • Beard = Chestnut Brown 9071 - undiluted (drybrushed)
  • Pith helmet and gunbelt cleanup = Pure White 9039 (undiluted)
  • Tunic, pant stripe, scabbard = Phoenix Red 9005 = (undiluted)
  • Skin = Rosy Highlight 9069 - 2:1 with slick water
  • Eyeballs = Black 0.2mm technical pen

Phase 4: Final Cleanup and Basing
Base: Dirt provided by common lava sand for your home garden/flower beds (organic gardening supply stores tend to have it more reliably than normal ones). I used an old flour sifter to sift out all the large particles (or retain all the small particles depending on your point of view). The flock is Woodland Scenics "Earth Blend" Blended Turf. The goal was a red-soil, arid world style base that would be easy to do.

Total time spent: 1 1/2 hours. I can certainly do this style "assembly line" so for my basic grunt troops I would say this was a successful test... kinda cool too considering the last time I put paint on a Praetorian was over a decade ago.
